We found out we were having twins at our first scan. James (Dad) was looking at the screen and then said “Oh, she has rolled over!”. At that point the machine operator informed us that she hadn’t rolled over, but that it was another baby. Needless to say we were stunned.
When you find out you’re having twins, a lot of feelings and thoughts rush through your head. Both good and bad. As parents of twins ourselves, here are some of the main points answered for you.
The bad stuff
Two babies. At the same time. That pretty much sums it up! The hardship, both physically and mentally are what really take their toll. Your twins will double pretty much everything; time, money, effort. However, as the month tick by, you will start to see things ease bit-by-bit.
Our advice from newborn is to seek out and accept any and all help you can get, especially when paternity leaves ends (see article here). Talk to family early and see how they are willing to support you. Depending on your circumstances, you may want to consider moving closer to family if they able to provide a large amount of on-going help.
The great stuff
As time goes on, you will start to see the good stuff emerging. Smiling, giggling, eye contact and the best – playing together. There’s no way to sugar-coat it, the first year is tough. However, as you get past that initial hardship, the good things far outweigh the bad.
We had always hoped to have 2 children and have them as close in age as possible. The reason we wanted them close in age is because we believe it means they would play together. Our twins girls were born a minute apart! The point is, your twins are going to have their best friend with them from birth. This is not only lovely for your twins, but as parents it’s great knowing they have each other.
Yep they will need 2 of everything at first. This goes beyond the clothes, muslins, nappies and consumables. It includes twice the washing, twice the water, twice the bottles, twice pretty much everything. That can add up quite quickly.
A great way to combat the financials is to shop second-hand and to talk to friends and family for old clothes. Being that you will need twice of everything, having a load of passed down clothes will ‘bulk up’ your stock. Facebook Marketplace and eBay are best used for second-hand items such as rockers or mobiles.
This may be more of an issue for some, depending on your setup. For newborn twins you generally will have a large room devoted to them. This is where their cots will be, along with clothes and all that jazz. However, being twins they will outgrow their cots at the same time and space might become more of an issue. It’s not as urgent as other areas, but try and think ahead to avoid any issues in the future.
Whilst this is a very brief overview, hopefully it gives you an insight into some of the things to consider if you’ve just found out your having twins. Though it might not seem so at first, there’s a lot of great things to look forward to!
